Merz clinches seat in cabinet
Hans-Rudolf Merz has become the newest member of the Swiss government. The senator is a member of the centre-right Radical Party and replaces Kaspar Villiger, who steps down at the end of the year.
Merz defeated his challenger, Christine Beerli, by 31 votes. The new government is made up of two Radicals, two Social Democrats and two members of the People’s Party. The Christian Democrats now only have one seat.
