Hunkeler wins bronze at Paralympics

Edith Hunkeler has won bronze in the women's 1500-metre wheelchair race at the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing.

Hunkeler made a successful return to the track having been admitted to hospital briefly on September 8 after causing a pile-up which took out six of the 11 racers in the 5000-metre race.

This is the 36-year-old’s third medal in two Olympics. In Athens Hunkeler, who has won the Swiss disabled athlete of the year six times, won two silvers.

In Beijing however the Canadian Chantal Petitclerc has dominated the women’s wheelchair events. In the 1500m on Tuesday Petitclerc finished ahead of Britain’s Shelly Woods to take her fifth gold.

Hunkeler’s bronze is Switzerland’s ninth medal – two gold, two silver and five bronze – at the Paralympics.
