Kosovar murder suspect to be extradited

A man accused of murdering a Swiss school teacher will be extradited back to Switzerland, the justice ministry confirmed on Thursday.

Ded Gecaj is accused of killing his daughter’s teacher at a St Gallen school in 1999. Afterwards he fled to his homeland of Kosovo, where he was re-arrested on Monday.

He confessed to the crime and in 2000 a court in Kosovo sentenced him to four years in prison for manslaughter. Two years later he was freed and went into hiding.

The Swiss authorities argue the sentence was too lenient.

They want to bring Gecaj to court to face murder charges as well as accusations of sexual abuse against his daughter.

In August 2009 Kosovo’s highest court ruled that Gecaj was eligible for extradition but the Kosovo government had to approve it.
