Basel footballers secure ninth Swiss Cup

Three goals in three minutes in the second half helped Super League leaders FC Basel to a 4-1 victory in this year's Swiss Cup final against underdogs AC Bellinzona.

Although the end result was clear, the match was by no means dominated by Basel, who had home advantage and went ahead in the first half with a goal from Eren Derdiyok.

Bellinzona, who are leaders of Switzerland’s second division – the Challenge League – bounced back after the break, equalising in the 58th minute through a shot from Christian Pouga.

While a sensation was in the air for a short time, Basel hit back and goals from Daniel Majstorovic (62nd minute), Marco Streller (63rd) and Benjamin Huggel (65th) put the result beyond doubt.

Attendance at the St Jakob stadium – venue for the opening game of the Euro 2008 championship between Switzerland and the Czech republic – was 33,000.

Last season Basel beat FC Lucerne 1-0 in the Swiss Cup final after scoring a penalty in the 93rd minute.
