Olympics: Federer through to tennis semi-finals

Federer continues to shine in Sydney Keystone

Swiss tennis player Roger Federer is just one match away from an Olympic medal, after reaching the semi-finals with a straight sets win over Morocco's Karim Alami.

The Basel teenager was forced into a tie break in the first set, but won the second in convincing style to take the match 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

Federer has been strong in his service game throughout the Olympic tournament and this match, his fourth straight sets win at the Games, was no exception. The Swiss player served 15 aces in reply to the Moroccan’s one, and won 85 per cent of his first-service points.

Federer must now square off against Germany’s Tommy Haas in the semi-finals. The winner is guaranteed either the silver or gold medal, while the loser will face a play-off for the bronze.

The Olympic semi-final will be the first official encounter between Federer and the 22-year-old German. In the other semi-final France’s Arnaud Di Pasquale will take on the tournament’s last remaining seeded player, Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
