Stocks, Bonds Rise as Oil Tumbles on US-Iran Hopes: Markets Wrap
(Bloomberg) — Stocks joined bonds higher as hopes for diplomatic efforts to end the war in Iran spurred a slump in oil prices, easing inflation anxiety.
West Texas Intermediate crude sank below $100 as Washington and Tehran signaled openness to talks. Long-term Treasuries outperformed. The S&P 500 rose 1% after its worst session since June. A gauge of megacaps climbed 1.8%, though Apple Inc. fell in the run-up to its results. Anthropic PBC reported revenue of nearly $17 billion before its blockbuster IPO.
Expectations for an escalation of the Middle East conflict eased as Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei gave the government the go-ahead to hold peace talks. That was after Axios reported President Donald Trump told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu he’s open to allowing more time for a diplomacy.
Geopolitics will likely be the primary driver of markets on Monday, and investors will want to see confirmation of the diplomatic “progress” to push oil prices even lower, according to Tom Essaye at The Sevens Report.
On the economic front, US manufacturing activity picked up in October, supported by the strongest production growth in nearly five years.
