Online gambling rules to be eased

The government plans to liberalise online gambling but wants to tighten measures against other forms of illegal gaming.

The justice ministry said that it would draft a proposal granting a limited number of licences to operators of such internet activities.

However, it wants to uphold a ban on gambling over the telephone and interactive television, according to a statement.

The change in the law is subject to approval by parliament.

Experts say the new forms of gambling could generate revenue of up to an estimated SFr26 million ($22 million) annually.

Online lotteries and bets over the internet are presently allowed under Swiss law.

Wednesday’s cabinet decision comes in response to an increasing number of illegal online money games.
