The Swiss hard rock group Gotthard was among the music groups and artists who got the week-long music festival in the town of Nyon off to a flying start. Organisers expect that about 200,000 visitors will flock to the concerts.

Gotthard, Canadian Brian Adams and Matmatah from France, to name only a few of the opening acts, attracted tens of thousands on the opening night on Tuesday.

What started out as a folk festival in 1976 has now become Switzerland’s largest open-air festival with a wide variety of music, ranging from reggae to jazz, rap, hip-hop and hard rock.

Zuccero, Stephan Eicher, Simply Red, Iggy Pop and Charles Aznavour are among the established national and international artists performing on the Nyon stages.

However, the organisers are also highlighting performances by newcomers such as the Finnish group 22 Pistepirkko, described as the originators of an elastic pop that mixes psychedelic sounds and finely sculpted melodies.
