Economics minister wants to help farmers

The Swiss economics minister, Doris Leuthard, says she would like to slow down the pace of agricultural reforms in Switzerland.

In an interview in Saturday’s Schweizer Bauer (Swiss Farmer), Leuthard said that it was unfair to expect farmers to adapt to changes every four years.

“We need laws that create security and clarity in the long term,” she commented, adding there was no other sector that came up for discussion in politics so frequently.

“I would like a system that indicates clearly to a farmer in which direction we are moving forward, so that he can make investments and organise his farm appropriately.”

At its annual news conference earlier this month, the farmers’ association called for more entrepreneurial freedom for its members to be successful and rejected the idea of an agricultural free trade agreement with the European Union.
