Government aid agency introduces new structure

The Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC) has introduced a new system to harmonise its activities and simplify the decision-making process.

The SDC said in a statement on Wednesday that the move was expected to raise the efficiency of its efforts to alleviate poverty and solve global development problems.

Measures include a reduction of the management board from 11 to seven members and the creation of staff office to help in planning.

Reforms at the SDC’s head office in Bern, which come in response to the government’s new unified development strategy, took four months to complete.

In a second phase, the role of the SDC’s missions abroad will be redefined.

Swiss Foreign Minister Micheline Calmy-Rey launched the SDC reform process in May. A task force led by the agency’s director, Martin Dahinden, is implementing it.
