Government sends plane for Chad expatriates

Switzerland is chartering an aircraft to repatriate Swiss citizens who left Chad's capital N'Djamena to escape fighting between government and rebel forces there.

The plane will head on Monday to Libreville in Gabon, where the French army is flying expatriates being evacuated from Chad.

The foreign ministry said 49 Swiss including children had left N’Djamena since Saturday along with hundreds of other expatriates. It added that 25 Swiss remained in N’Djamena, housed in two of the three centres secured by the French.

A team of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit is already in Libreville to help citizens arriving there.

Most of the 120 Swiss living in Chad, including 80 in the capital, work for the International Committee of the Red Cross, non-governmental organisations or are missionaries.
