Merkel plans Swiss trip
The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, will make an official visit to Switzerland at the end of April.
The announcement came during a meeting in Berlin on Monday between the chancellor and the Swiss president, Pascal Couchepin.
A dispute over Zurich airport is expected to be high on the agenda during the April meeting between Merkel and Swiss government ministers.
Following complaints about airplane noise from the authorities in German areas near the Swiss border, restrictions were placed on flight movements. However, the issue has not been completely resolved.
“A real dialogue is possible [on this issue]; the talks are not deadlocked,” Couchepin said during a news conference at the Swiss embassy.
Couchepin also met German president, Horst Köhler, in Berlin, and on Tuesday will attend the city’s film festival, the Berlinale. As interior minister, Couchepin is also responsible for Swiss cultural affairs, including the film industry.
