Politicians run circles around parliament

A record number of parliamentarians took part in the tenth annual "Parlamotion" jog around the parliamentary building in Bern on Thursday.

Jogging or on rollerblades, the 15 female and 32 male parliamentarians covered a total of 154,200 metres in 20 minutes.

But despite the enthusiasm from parliamentarians, Sport Minister Ueli Maurer, who blew the starting whistle at 6.30am, declined to join them.

In a statement the Federal Sport Office said Maurer did not join the group because he had already completed his daily sporting activity by riding his bike to work.

Of the political parties, the Radicals were the best represented amongst the group, followed by the Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Swiss People’s Party and the Greens.
