Thousands rally against Kosovo independence
Several thousand Serbs rallied outside the Geneva headquarters of the United Nations on Sunday to protest against independence for Kosovo.
Police put the number of demonstrators at between 3,500 and 4,000, while organisers spoke of 8,000.
The demonstrators waved Serbian flags and placards, and listened to speeches and music.
A smaller demonstration took place in Zurich on Saturday.
Serbia’s ambassador to Switzerland has warned Switzerland of the consequences of recognising Kosovo.
“Switzerland would put its traditional good relations with Serbia at risk,” if it decided to recognise the independence of Kosovo, ambassador Dragan Marsicanin told the newspaper Sonntag.
He said such recognition would undermine the “basic principles of Swiss foreign policy, namely neutrality and respect for international law”.
The Swiss government is expected to take a decision on the matter in the coming weeks.
