Swiss Stock Exchange to extend trading hours

Changes afoot at the Swiss Stock Exchange Keystone Archive

The Swiss stock exchange, the SWX, announced on Tuesday that it will extend trading by an hour and open on Swiss holidays when it launches its pan-European blue chip trading platform next month.

Equity securities, derivative instruments and exchange-traded funds will now stay open until 1800 local time to bring it into line with London-based virt-x’s hours.

Virt-x is being created through the merger of the SWX’s blue-chip sector with the British based electronic stock exchange, Tradepoint. It will begin by trading leading Swiss and British shares and then include stocks from the Dow Jones Stoxx pan-European index. It opens for business on 25 June.

SWX is also restructuring its calendar of holidays to confirm with the virt-x schedule. This means that 2 January, Ascension Day, Whit Monday and Switzerland’s 1 August national holiday will in future be trading days.
