At least 230,000 soldiers from the Franco-Sardinian and Austrian armies clashed in Solferino in northern Italy on June 24, 1859 along a 15-kilometre frontline in a fierce conflict that lasted over 12 hours. More than 6,000 soldiers were killed and more than 30,000 were wounded.
