Stadler Rail, the Thurgau-based train manufacturer, has a new contract to supply 21 additional trains to Finland.

The order forms part of an option provided for in the original contract that the Finnish company VR had signed with Stadler in November 2022, the group said in a press release on Friday. The agreement covered the sale of 20 trains and an option for a further 50.

The contract has been transferred to RailStock Finland Oy, the Finnish state-owned company responsible for managing the development and leasing of rail vehicles for passenger services.

“Our aim is to ensure sustainable public rail transport that does not distort competition, by providing all operators in the country with reliable, high-quality rolling stock,” said Joakim Mette, CEO of RailStock Finland Oy, cited in the statement.

“Investments in new rolling stock lay the foundations for maintaining and further developing state-subsidised passenger rail transport in Finland over the coming decades,” he said.

Stadler has designed the low-floor trains, consisting of four carriages, specifically to meet the needs of the Scandinavian country: they are designed to operate reliably even in difficult weather conditions. The Flirt trains are specifically fitted with larger snow ploughs, underfloor heating and improved thermal insulation. Each train offers 340 seats and can accommodate up to 700 passengers in total. The maximum speed is 160 km/h. Production will take place at the group’s factories in Poland.

On the stock market, Stadler Rail shares are trading slightly lower this afternoon, at around CHF32. Since the start of January, the share price has risen by 48%, and over the past twelve months the increase has been 63%. It should also be noted that when the company was first listed on the stock exchange in April 2019, the share was trading at CHF43.

Stadler Rail traces its origins back to the engineering firm founded by Ernst Stadler in Zurich in 1942. The company is now headquartered in Bussnang, canton Thurgau, and manufactures a wide range of rolling stock, from high-speed trains to regional trains, as well as trams and metro trains – vehicles that also operate on railway lines in Switzerland and Ticino. It employs 18,000 people, 6,000 of whom are based in Switzerland. In 2025, it achieved a turnover of CHF3.7 billion.
