Around 90 of Böcklin's paintings are due to be exhibited in the museum between May 5 and August 12. The exhibition will show the development of his style from late Romanticism to symbolism.

Several variations of his "Villa on the Sea", three versions of "Death Island" and six self-portraits will be among the works displayed.

The exhibition will have added symbolism, as it is 20 years since the last retrospective of Böcklin's work.
