Basel retain Super League title

FC Basel has held onto its Swiss Super League champion title after an easy win over FC Lucerne 3-0 on Wednesday.

By half time the title was already secure for the Basel side after two goals by Shaqiri – best scorer of the tournament – before the 44th minute.

Delighting the home fans at St Jakob’s Park, Zoua headed a third goal in the 54th minute after a corner by Alex Frei.

It’s the 14th time the team has won the title, winning with 72 points. One point behind in the league were FC Zurich, followed by Young Boys of Bern (57 points) and Sion (54).

Also on Wednesday, in a 0-0 result, Neuchâtel Xamax managed to hold onto their place in the league thanks to a token performance by Sion, who had already qualified for the Europa League and may have decided to save their best players for the two teams’ match on Sunday in the Swiss Cup final.

At the bottom of the league, St Gallen were relegated to the second division. Lausanne-Sport have now qualified for the Super League. The Lausanne team have been out of the league for nine years, but moved up after in a 4-0 win against Biel/Bienne in the Challenge League – to the sound of fans chanting Queen’s “We are the champions”.
