CDs lose further ground to downloads

Sales of CDs, records and cassettes slumped by 16 per cent in Switzerland last year, according to the recording industry association, Ifpi.

While sales dropped to SFr121 million ($135 million) from SFr144 million, the market for digital downloads from the internet is thriving and increased 11 per cent over 2009.

However, Ifpi says illegal downloads are still a major problem for the recording industry. It called for legal amendments and welcomed an extended cooperation between 18 official download and streaming services.

Four Swiss artists and groups, including Gotthard with the late lead singer Steve Lee, Gölä and the Bellamy Brothers and the rapper Bligg made it into Switzerland’s top ten bestsellers of 2010.
