Art museums join forces

Switzerland’s Fine Arts museums have banded together in order to speak with one voice on issues affecting them in politics and the media.

Switzerland’s Fine Arts museums have banded together in order to speak with one voice on issues affecting them in politics and the media.

Against a background of rising costs for exhibitions and conservation, they have created a “Conference of Swiss Art Museums” in which the countries leading public galleries can meet to address issues of common interest.

The forum had been proposed by the director of the Kunstmuseum in Winterthur, Dieter Schwarz, who said rather than acting independently, there was a need for museums to exchange information on such matters as exhibition plans and the question of sponsorship.

Schwarz added that Swiss museums were not well known enough and would benefit from more joint projects and co-operation in public relations.

Last year many Swiss art museums made a joint approach to tourist authorities, in a move to encourage more “art” tourism.
