The Swiss foreign minister, Joseph Deiss, took a break from his political schedule in Egypt to visit the Cairo office of the Swiss arts centre, Pro Helvetia.
Deiss met the new director of the Cairo office, Anita Müller, and found out about some of the projects the council is undertaking to promote Swiss culture. One such project, a play in Arabic and Swiss-German, has been seen by 20,000 young people during a tour of the country.
Pro Helvetia’s Cairo office was its first outside Europe, when it opened 12 years ago, and for a long time it was the only one. A second bureau outside Europe was opened in Cape Town in 1997.
