Mendelssohn, Bach-Busoni, Liszt, Messiaen. Reto Reichenbach, Piano
Swiss pianist Reto Reichenbach is cultivating a broad repertoire which ranges from the Baroque era up to contemporary music, with a certain emphasis on Romantic and 20th century composers.
When he chose the program for this recording he used the theme which stood as a motto over a recital he played at the Menuhin Festival Gstaad 2010: Between heaven and earth. The starting point was J.S. Bach. Few composers have embraced the spiritual dimension in music as consistently as he did. Three ways of dealing with the work of Bach from the romantic era (Mendelssohn, Busoni, Liszt) are juxtaposed on this CD. All share the vital significance of Lutheran and other church chorales.
Olivier Messiaen's '20 Regards sur l'Enfant-Jésus' is deeply rooted in the Catholic faith.
