Museum-goers on the rise
Visitor numbers to Switzerland's national museums were up in 2007, with over 260,000 people flocking through their doors.
This was 20,000 more than the previous year, a 13 per cent increase according to figures released by the interior ministry on Wednesday.
The National Museum in Zurich, which houses the largest collection of artefacts in the country, had the biggest rise in visitor figures – a 23 per cent increase – attracting 109,000 people during the year.
Elsewhere, the number of visitor entries remained more or less constant.
In a bid to attract even more visitors, the permanent collections at several museums will undergo a “total transformation” starting next year, the committee in charge of the national museums announced.
The changes will affect Zurich’s National Museum from 2009, the Swiss History Forum in Schwyz from 2010 and Prangins Castle between 2008 and 2014.
The national museum group manages 15 institutions across the country.
