Nyon presents the world through eyes of filmmakers

Director of the festival, Jean Perret, has once again got his projectors ready to roll Keystone Archive

A special focus on South African films will be one of the highlights at this year's "Visions du Réel" - a week-long documentary film festival, starting in Nyon on April 23.

“The Gugulettu Seven” – an investigation into apartheid – is one of the five South African films to be shown in Nyon, and is also entered into the festival’s international competition.

There will also be works by eastern European filmmakers exploring the fall of the Iron Curtain and Germany’s reunification, while Taiwanese films question the uneasy relationship between the island state and China.

More than 100 films from around the world will be shown at the festival, including many world premiers.

One film which is expected to receive special attention is the French-Canadian production, “l’abri du temps”, which, according to the festival organisers, is “an inspired essay on the measure of time and the development of tools to capture its passing”.

There will also be a screening of a documentary by the well-known feature filmmaker, Emir Kusturica. “Super 8 Stories” follows the band “No Smoking” on a tour of Kusturica’s home region – the Balkans.

As every year in Nyon, forums and debates will be held each day with the participation of the filmmakers and audience.
