Schubert: Symphony No. 7 “Unfinished”, Rondo, Concerto, Polonaise. Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Andreas Janke, violin. David Zinman, direction

swissinfo.ch

Romantic. Schubert's Unfinished Symphony is full of unique stylistic surprises and ends in a detached, almost dreamy mood, which poses a perfect challenge for David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra. Both are currently at their peak, as evinced by their dense output of marvelous recordings with a focus on romantic classics. As on their previous renditions they give this solemn genre a rather chamber music touch. It's thanks to their glassy, perfectly harmonious sound that they get to the bottom of this multilayered music. Other selections of this all-Schubert album feature this genius' lighter works for violin and orchestra (D 438, D 580 & D 345). Tonhalle concertmaster Andreas Janke plays his solo parts on all these sparkling pieces with quicksilver agility.

Allegro moderato. From Symphony No. 7
