Swiss help Le Corbusier Unesco bid

Switzerland has signed a proposal aiming to put the works of renowned Swiss architect and city planner Le Corbusier onto the Unesco World Heritage list.

It was among seven countries which on Wednesday lent their support to the bid in the French capital, Paris. In all, 23 Le Corbusier creations are included in the dossier, four of which are in Switzerland.

The candidacy is being put forward by France – the Swiss spent much of his life in Paris – and is supported by Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Argentina, India and Japan.

The bid is the first one for works of a 20th century architect in several countries, said the Swiss Federal Culture Office in a statement.

Le Corbusier, whose real name was Charles-Édouard Jeanneret-Gris, was born in canton Neuchâtel in 1887 and died in France in 1965.

The United Nations cultural agency is expected to decide on the proposal in 2009.
