Deep Purple tops bill at Gampel music festival

Legendary rockers Deep Purple will be headlining the Gampel festival Keystone Archive

Rock giants Deep Purple will be topping the bill at this week's 16th Open Air Gampel festival, which promises to be bigger and better than in previous years.

The organisers have boosted the budget by SFr600,000 to SFr2.1 million ($1.25 million), added an extra day’s entertainment, constructed a third stage and raised the main stage by two metres.

The stellar line-up also includes Switzerland’s DJ Bobo, who will bring his “Planet Colours” tour to the Valais. It will be the first time Switzerland’s best-selling pop star and his new wife, Nancy, have performed together since the pair tied the knot at Lucerne’s Gütsch Castle last week.

An appearance by the American rock/punk/funk/hip hop outfit, Papa Roach, is one of the highglights, and other acts performing before an estimated 40,000 festivalgoers include Liz Libido, the Freestylers, Feeder and Martin Schenkel. Swiss vocalist, Sina, who comes from Gampel, will appear on Saturday night.

The festival finishes on Sunday.
