Ammann makes Four Hills podium with record jump

Swiss ski jump Olympic champion Simon Ammann had to settle for third place in the second stage of the Four Hills Tour, but has retained his overall World Cup lead.

First placed Gregor Schlierenzauer beat Austrian teammate Wolfgang Loitzl after collecting 277.7 points for jumps of 136.5 and 137.5 metres in Friday’s event in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany.

Loitzl, last year’s tour winner, had 277.5 points after landing both times at 135 metres. Ammann trailed Loitzl by one-tenth of a point to finish third despite achieving a hill-record 143.5 meters in the second heat. Amman had a first jump of 132 meters.

Ammann, of St Gallen, remained in the overall World Cup lead with 529 points, ahead of four Austrians.

It was a dark day for fellow Swiss Andreas Küttel who in 50th position did not qualify for the final.
