Established in 1935 as a radio orchestra, the Orchestra della Svizzera italiana initially specialized in the classical Viennese and early Romantic repertoires, as well as in the twentieth-century one. But its artistic standards - resulting from a combination of Swiss precision and a typical Latin imagination - improved so much in the after-war period to attract some of the most celebrated conductors (Ansermet, Schuricht, Celibidache, Scherchen, Sinopoli, Inbal, Marriner...)
