Glaciers continue steady decline
Most of Switzerland’s glaciers continued to shrink in 2010, according to the Swiss National Academy of Sciences.
Of 112 glaciers under observation, the academy evaluated the position of 91. Of those, 82 had retreated, six had barely moved and three had shown a slight progression.
Most glaciers which had retreated measured movements of between one and 25 metres, but the Gauli glacier in canton Bern retreated some 196 metres, the academy said.
The Trient glacier in canton Valais reported a 14-metre advance but the academy said this was tempered by its sharp retreat over recent years.
“Its point is now on an abrupt slope,” it said in a statement. “From this position, it is possible that it will experience irregular progressions and retreats in the future as well.”
