Hundreds more are making it to a hundred
An increasing number of people in Switzerland are reaching the age of 100, according to figures published by the Federal Statistics Office.
The Statistics Office says that from the generation of 1900, less than one per cent managed to celebrate their 100th birthday but that situation has now changed.
Of men born in 1950, 4.4 per cent can theoretically reach the age of 100; when it comes to women, the percentage rises to 9.2 per cent – that’s almost one in ten.
The Statistics Office notes that few people will reach the age of 110 unless there are exceptional advances in medicine.
According to forecasts, only 0.6 per cent of boys and 1.1 per cent of girls who are born in 2010 have a chance of reaching that age.
