Parliamentarian Anna Giacometti was one of the five cleared of all charges.

The Maloja Regional Court in southwest Switzerland found no evidence that there had been clear signs of an imminent major incident in the weeks leading up to the major rockslide.

It concluded that the defendants were not negligent by failing to take measures – specifically, the closure of the footpaths in the danger zone.

Eight people lost their lives in the landslide in August 2017. Two cantonal officials, an external geologist and two representatives of the municipality of Bregaglia stood trial.

The prosecution had sought suspended fines for all five defendants.
