Arctic weather makes an appearance
Temperatures have plummeted to as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius in some parts of Switzerland, the lowest recorded so far this season.
The minus 25 degrees was measured on the Ofenpass in the eastern canton Graubünden on Saturday night. Valais, in the French-speaking part of the country was not too far behind with minus 22 degrees at Obergoms.
Even Italian-speaking Ticino, normally the warmest and sunniest part of Switzerland, was not spared. Temperatures fell to minus seven in Chiasso, said the national weather service, MeteoSwiss.
Freezing temperatures were recorded across the country at Lake Geneva, Basel, and Lake Constance.
MeteoSwiss expects the cold spell to last until the end of the week. The mountains will be a little warmer and stay dry – ideal for winter sports, added the weather experts.
