Summer festival season swings into action

Drummers from Montreux at the Basel festival Keystone

The month of July in Switzerland has begun with musical events to suit all tastes.

In Basel, tens of thousands of people lined the streets to watch a procession of bands playing the fifes and drums, and an estimated 77,000 fans of traditional Swiss music attended a yodelling festival at Buochs in Canton Nidwalden.

But not all the music was folkloric. About 22,000 people went to the annual open-air festival in St Gallen, where the performers included Macy Gray, Ziggy Marley and Huey Lewis. And 25,000 traditional jazz fans – a record attendance – were at the town’s New Orleans jazz festival.

A blues festival in Neuchatel attracted 7,000 people – fewer than expected. The organisers believe many stayed away because for the first time the public had to pay for admission to the festival.
