Winning start for Gagliardi
Emmanuelle Gagliardi is the first Swiss player through to the second round of this year's Wimbledon tennis tournament.
The Swiss women’s number four (WTA 98) enjoyed a straight sets victory over British wildcard entry Lucy Ahl (WTA 175), winning Monday’s match 6-4, 6-1.
The win puts Gagliardi into the second round of the prestigious London tournament for only the second time in her career, having previously won once at Wimbledon in 1997.
The 24-year-old Genevan will now have to beat America’s Kristina Brandi (WTA 41) if she is to book her first ever place in the competition’s third round.
Gagliardi is one of eight Swiss players to have reached the main Wimbledon draw. Switzerland’s two top players, Martina Hingis and Roger Federer, are also due to play on Monday as are Marc Rosset, Miroslava Vavrinec and Ivo Heuberger.
