The world number one needed only 51 minutes to secure a place in the semi-finals. Hingis also defeated Kruger in straight sets on two previous occasions.

Her performance was all the more remarkable, after a difficult game on Thursday.

Hingis had difficulty beating Maria Vento in Thursday's second round. The Venezuelan showed considerably more resistance than expected.

After having to defend two set points, Hingis finally overpowered her opponent, taking the game 7-6,6-1.

Hingis's next game is against the Austrian Barbara Schett.
