'Swiss romanticist' is a label attached to this composer. At least we can say that J.J. Raff was born in Switzerland, in Lachen on Lake Zurich. His mother was the daughter of the innkeeper, but his father, the local schoolmaster, was an immigrant from the Catholic region of Württemberg, which means that Raff was of mixed Swabian-Swiss parentage.
