Lions continue home improvements

Zurich goalscorer Adrien Plavsic gets some stick from Fribourg's Martin Rauch Keystone

Defending Swiss ice hockey champions the Zurich Lions appear to be recovering from their terrible start to the season. A 4-1 win over Fribourg on Wednesday stretched the Lions unbeaten run at home to five matches.

Despite the emphatic scoreline, the Lions on Wednesday failed to show the consistency that has brought them the national title for the last two years. But the odd flash of brilliance was more than enough to see off a disappointing Fribourg.

In front of a loyal 7,650 Zurich fans, the visitors did manage to take a surprise lead thanks to a 13th minute powerplay goal from Philippe Marquis.

The Lions made the most of a strong spell in the second period, though, to fire themselves into a 3-1 lead with strikes from Peter Jaks and impressive defenders Adrien Plavsic and Mark Streit.

With the result already looking beyond doubt, Michel Zeiter added a fourth for Zurich in the 47th minute.

The win lifted the Lions up to seventh place in the league, at the expense of Lausanne, while Fribourg dropped down to eighth, just one point above their Wednesday hosts.
