Schnyder crashes out of Australian Open

Switzerland's top woman tennis player Patty Schnyder has been beaten 6-3, 6-1 in the second round of the Australian Open by Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano.

The defeat comes two days after 30-year-old Schnyder, the 14th seed, struggled to beat a 15-year-old ranked 999 in the world.

Melbourne is the scene of Schnyder’s best grand slam performance – she reached the semifinals in 2004 and had previously reached the quarterfinals five times in a row.

However, in 2008 the court surface was changed, which Schnyder says affected her game. Last year she also lost in the second round.

The two remaining Swiss in the tournament, Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, are both in action on Friday.
