Swiss appointed to top European research job

Dieter Imboden has been appointed president of the European Heads of Research Councils (EuroHORCs), the first Swiss to take on the role.

Imboden, president of the national research council of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), will head the established science policy-making platform for three years.

More than 40 European research organisations are represented in EuroHORCs. The organisation is a key partner to the European Union concerning research policy.

According to the SNSF, the appointment of non-EU Switzerland to lead the association of heads of national research organisations and public research institutions in Europe is a significant and positive signal for Swiss research.

Imboden considers his appointment “recognition of the active research policy-making role of Switzerland in Europe and a clear indication that research in our country continues to command the highest regard in the international arena”.
