Army unit isolated amid swine flu scare
About 250 people at an army barracks in western Switzerland have been put under quarantine over suspected cases of swine influenza A/H1N1.
The defence ministry said two recruits in Fribourg had been hospitalised after complaining of flu symptoms. One had been in contact with a Mexican.
The precautionary measure will be upheld until at least Wednesday when the test results of the flu suspects are known.
At total of 20 cases are still under examination, while one mild case of the virus was confirmed affecting a tourist who returned from Mexico.
He was released from hospital over the weekend, but about 30 other people he had been in contact with must remain isolated.
Fifty others from the town of Aarau, who were feared infected, were cleared.
The Geneva-based World Health Organization has warned against lowering safety measures despite Mexico’s announcement the flu virus had entered a stabilisation phase.
The disease, which is believed to have its origins in Mexico, caused more than 20 deaths, mostly in Mexico.
