Couchepin cancels visit to Shanghai

Bad weather has prevented Swiss President Pascal Couchepin from attending the opening of a Swiss science centre in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

He is to travel directly from Vietnam – where he held three-days of talks – to Beijing for the opening of the Olympic Summer Games.

The interior ministry said the Swiss state secretary for education and research, Mauro Dell’Ambrogio, represented Couchepin at the ceremony of SwissNex on Wednesday.

The centre in Shanghai is aimed at boosting cooperation between China and Switzerland in education, research, technology and culture.

SwissNex is a network of five science outposts in India, Singapore, China and the United States designed to strengthen Switzerland as a location for science, technology and innovation.
