Eighty musicians are taking part in an international competition in Canton Valais during the next two months - and entertaining the public at some 30 concerts in several towns and cities.

The contest is part of the annual Tibor Varga festival, named after the violinist who founded it nearly 40 years ago in the cantonal capital, Sion. In addition, about 500 music students from all over the world will be attending master classes at Sion’s prestigious music academy.

Cellist Heinrich Schiff is the festival’s guest of honour this year and was to have been the soloist at the opening concert performance of Haydn’s First Cello Concerto. But he was unable to play because of an injured hand, and his place was taken by Tanja Tetzlaff.
