Williams beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 7-6 (1), 6-2 in Sunday's final. The 28-year-old American last won the Zurich title as a teenager in 1999.

"It is great to come here and play my best tennis of the week in the final against someone who is playing as well as she is," said Williams of her opponent and her win.

Pennetta went in with a 3-1 career record against third-seeded Williams and had beaten her in Moscow last week. The 17th-ranked Italian was trying to become only the third player ever to beat her for a fourth straight match.

The Zurich Open WTA tour event is ending in 2008 after 25 years.

At the emotional closing ceremony, the long-standing tournament director Beat Ritschard thanked everyone for their support.

Williams herself said, "I hope to have another chance to play in Zurich one day".
