Swiss vessel crosses Gulf of Aden unscathed

A vessel of the Swiss merchant fleet has safely crossed the Gulf of Aden which has been threatened by Somali pirates.

A German warship intervened on Thursday to halt an attack by pirates on an Egyptian carrier in the region.

The Swiss Maritime Navigation Office declined to give further details on the Swiss vessel, but a week ago another commercial ship was followed by suspected pirates.

Mounting attacks in the Gulf between Somalia and Yemen triggered a public debate over whether Switzerland should participate in a European Union-led anti-piracy mission and dispatch special troops to protect Swiss vessels.

Landlocked Switzerland – which is not a member of the EU – has a merchant fleet of 35 privately-operated tankers and container ships.
