A sale of Swiss art in Zurich by the auctioneers Sotheby's has raised SFr2.6 million ($1.6 million).

The star of the show was a 1908 canvas by Cuno Amiet, entitled “Still life with apples and flowers”, which fetched SFr767,000.

However the biggest surprise came with an oil painting by Willy Guggenheim, who painted under the name Varlin. “Stockerstrasse” sold for SFr224,000 – almost three times its estimate – and was the highest price ever paid for a piece of work by the artist.

Giovanni Giacometti’s “Morning Ride” and Ferdinand Hodler’s “Bois de la Bâtie” both fetched SFr212,400, reflecting each artist’s enduring value in the art market.
