Basel cathedral celebrates 500th birthday
The city of Basel is celebrating the 500th birthday of its cathedral at the weekend, culminating in a multimedia "son et lumière" show on Saturday.
The two-day extravaganza is costing around SFr400,000 ($228,000) and was funded entirely by donations from local people.
The highlight will be a special show on Saturday night, designed by Edgar Hagen and Rolf Derrer, which will tell the history of the Münster using a combination of sound, light, special effects and music.
A series of concerts inside the cathedral will provide the musical entertainment, with a wide variety of songs, from pop music to chorales by Händel.
There will also be an outdoor market, where visitors will be able to watch artisans, such as bricklayers and glassblowers, plying their trade.
