Leuthard opens Solothurn Film Festival

This year’s Swiss president, Doris Leuthard, has opened the 45th Solothurn Film Festival in what she said would be an “exciting year” for Swiss cinema.

She called on the filmmakers to create “dream worlds”, adding that others were responsible for nightmares…

This did not mean however that cinema shouldn’t be critical. “We don’t need a picture-book Switzerland – we need the constructive examination of difficult issues,” she said on Thursday evening.

Switzerland’s largest film festival after Locarno is devoted to showing Swiss films of all genres including documentaries, fiction, animation, and experimental pictures.

The festival, which this year runs until January 28, was founded in the late 1960s when Swiss filmmakers found it difficult to get their work shown in cinemas and therefore reach a wider audience.
