Rock bands move mountains

The imposing 4,000 metre peaks of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau will echo the sound of rock music on March 23.

The Kleine Scheidegg Pass in the Jungfrau ski region is the stage for this year’s “SnowpenAir” festival, and the main attraction is the Swiss rock ‘n roll band, Gotthard. The group has sold over one million CDs since it first appeared on the Swiss music scene in 1991.

Gotthard has moved away from performing hard rock in recent years and has turned to more melodic pop. During the festival, the band is expected to dip into its latest CD, “One life one soul – best of ballads” which was released to celebrate the band’s tenth anniversary.

Gotthard and Chinese rock

Gotthard will be joined on the Kleine Scheidegg stage by two other Swiss acts and a Chinese rock band. The pop singer Sina sings in Swiss-German dialect while Core 22 mixes pop, dance and trip hop.

From China, Second Hand Roses fuses elements of popular Chinese culture with western pop. Besides rock instruments, the band plays the “Suona” – a traditional Chinese wind instrument.

The festival kicks off at 11am and ends at 5pm. Tickets cost SFr50 ($30). A weekend package beginning on Friday and ending Sunday, including a ticket to the festival, hotel accommodation and ski pass costs SFr135.
